The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) is a U.S. law designed to provide privacy standards to protect patients’ medical records and other health information provided to health plans, doctors, hospitals and other health care providers (defined as “Protected Health Information or PHI”). Developed by the Department of Health and Human Services, these standards provide patients with access to their medical records and more control over how their PHI is used and disclosed. In accordance with HIPAA, it is imperative that we maintain the confidence of PHI that we receive in the course of our work. MLH prohibits associates from disclosing any patient information to anyone outside the organization unless required for purposes of treatment, payment, or health care operations, and discussions of PHI with the organization should be limited to prevent disclosures to those who do not have a need to know.
